African Americans and Afro-Latinos a common history →

Herein lies the problem with US imperialism.

By hoarding the name “America” the United States divides people of African-descent leading us to believe that we are difference when we aren’t.

Every person of African-descent in the Americas whether they be from the United States, Canada, the Caribbean, or Latin America IS African-American.

Our histories have never be different or separate.  We’ve always been united by common ancestry, common culture, and the stories of how we came to live in this hemisphere.

Al-Jazeera head quits after Wikileaks blows lid off relationship with U.S. →

fuckyeahmarxismleninism:

From independent journalist Lizzie Phelan: “No surprises then, Al Jazeera which has been at the CENTRE of the conspiracy against Libya, sees their director general, Wadah Kanfar, resign after Wikileaks exposes his secret meetings with the CIA. The station is responsible for spinning out lies that led to war crimes.”

Qatar’s government has replaced Wadah Khanfar, the director-general of the al-Jazeera satellite TV network, with a member of its own royal family – a sudden and dramatic move at a time of unprecedented turmoil across the Middle East.

Khanfar, credited with revolutionising the Arab media landscape, announced that he was resigning after eight years that consolidated both the channel’s reputation and his position as one of the most powerful figures in the region.

The new director-general is said to be Sheikh Ahmed bin Jassim Al Thani, an executive at Qatargas and a member of the country’s ruling dynasty.

Recently, al-Jazeera has been accused of pulling its punches over the uprising in the Gulf state of Bahrain. It barely reports on events in Qatar itself.

Byron Spellman, 16, left, Robert Coleman, 15, center, and Elijah West, 16, right, are a few of the local Savannah youths who stood in front of a crowd Saturday at Sacred Heart Church wearing t-shirts implying that they are Troy Davis. They wanted to represent to the community that this unfortunate circumstance could happen to anyone at any age and that Troy Davis could have just as easily been them. One speaker said that people are walking around Savannah at this very moment without a care in the world and turning their heads to this situation, and they will continue to do so until it is their own loved one whose fate will be decided by an unjust system.

Danny Glover's Haiti film lacked 'white heroes', producers said →

notesonascandal:

rosaflora:

US actor Danny Glover, who plans an epic next year on Haitian independence hero Toussaint-Louverture, said he slaved to raise funds for the movie because financiers complained there were no white heroes.

“Producers said ‘It’s a nice project, a great project… where are the white heroes?’” he told the press during a stay in Paris this month for a seminar on film.

“I couldn’t get the money here, I couldn’t get the money in Britain. I went to everybody. You wouldn’t believe the number of producers based in Europe, and in the States, that I went to,” he said.

D”The first question you get, is ‘Is it a black film?’ All of them agree, it’s not going to do good in Europe, it’s not going to do good in Japan.

“Somebody has to prove that to be a lie!”, he said. “Maybe I’ll have the chance to prove it.”

“Toussaint,” Glover’s first project as film director, is about Francois Dominique Toussaint Louverture (1743-1803), a former slave and one of the fathers of Haiti’s independence from France in 1804, making it the first black nation to throw off imperial rule and become a republic.

The uprising he led was bloodily put down in 1802 by 20,000 soldiers dispatched to the Caribbean by Napoleon Bonaparte, who then re-established slavery after its ban by the leaders of the French Revolution.

Due to be shot in Venezuela early next year, the film will star Don Cheadle, Mos Def, Wesley Snipes and Angela Bassett.

How the fuck can a film about the Haitian Revolution/Fight for Independence/Black Slave Revolt have “white heroes”??

People just make me sick sometimes.

Gon’ Danny Glover, make that film. I promise to go see it.

Why independent media is necessary and people of color need to tell our OWN stories 101

U.S. aid implicated in abuses of power in Colombia →

fuckyeahmarxismleninism:

New revelations in long-running political scandals under former president Alvaro Uribe, a close U.S. ally throughout his eight-year tenure, have implicated American aid, and possibly U.S. officials, in egregious abuses of power and illegal actions by the Colombian government under the guise of fighting terrorism and drug smuggling.

American cash, equipment and training, supplied to elite units of the Colombian intelligence service over the past decade to help smash cocaine-trafficking rings, were used to carry out spying operations and smear campaigns against Supreme Court justices, Uribe’s political opponents and civil society groups, according to law enforcement documents obtained by The Washington Post and interviews with prosecutors and former Colombian intelligence officials.
